Sullivan County Democrats wants to help you run for office! We have compiled a list of resources that could be helpful to you. We want to emphasize that running for office is not something that you need to be asked to do—if you believe you would be a good candidate, you should run for the top of the ticket
downward! In addition, we encourage Sullivan County Democrats to run for local and county positions. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions you may have about running for office.
New Hampshire State Senate
Sullivan County is represented in the State Senate by District 5 (Canaan, Charlestown, Claremont, Cornish, Enfield, Hanover, Lebanon, Lyme, and Plainfield) and District 8 (Acworth, Antrim, Bennington, Bradford, Croydon, Deering, Francestown, Goshen, Grantham, Hillsborough, Langdon, Lempster, Marlow, Newbury, New London, Newport, Springfield, Stoddard, Sunapee, Sutton, Unity, Washington, Weare, and Windsor).
There are 24 total senators in the New Hampshire State Senate. Our current State Senators are Senator Suzanne Prentiss (D-District 5) and Senator Ruth Ward (R-District 8).
To run for the New Hampshire State Senate, you must be 30 years of age, a registered voter, and have lived in New Hampshire for at least 7 years. You have to live in the district where you are running as a candidate for the New Hampshire State Senate.
New Hampshire House of Representatives
In the New Hampshire House of Representatives, Sullivan County is represented by 11 districts. To run for the NH House of Representatives, you must be 18 years old, a registered voter, and you must have lived in New Hampshire for at least two years. You also must live in the town or ward where you are a candidate for the New Hampshire House of Representatives.
Local and County Offices
As referenced above, we encourage Democrats to run for offices on all levels. The elected offices on the Sullivan County level include three County Commissioner offices, County Attorney, County Treasurer, County Sheriff, Register of Deeds, and Register of Probate. Depending upon whether you live in a town or a city, you could run for Select Person or City Council member. You can also run for Town Clerk, Tax Collector, Road Agent, Supervisor of the Checklist, Library Trustee, Cemetery Sexton, and Town Welfare Administrator.
