Roe v Wade Vigil

Dear UV Democratic friends,

This is a very difficult day for democracy. The Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, and while legal scholars still have a lot of analysis to do, the language is deeply troubling and suggests that many other legal decisions are also on the table. In his concurring opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote:

“For that reason, in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell…”

Griswold – invalidating state contraception bans
Lawrence – invalidating state anti-sodomy laws
Obergefell – legalizing same-sex marriage in all states

This decision appears to be a worst-case scenario situation. A visibility has been organized for TODAY at 5pm on the Green in Hanover if you would like to express your thoughts and feelings with likeminded people.

This decision also underscores the incredible importance of our electoral work this November. New Hampshire Republicans have already passed an abortion ban in the past two years, and if they gain the majority once again, they will certainly continue rolling back access to safe, legal abortion in New Hampshire. The stakes could not be higher. We must organize here in the Upper Valley, and we must target our resources to help competitive races in our region to tip the scales toward a Democratic majority in the state legislature this November.
